Upload Assignment Scores to GradeBook

You can upload scores to your GradeBook from a file for assignments your students completed outside of WebAssign.

  1. Click Grades > Import Scores to GradeBook.
  2. Select I want to upload a set of assignments from a file.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Download an assignment scores template for your class.

    Download the template to get a file — prepopulated with your students' information — formatted correctly for you to add assignment scores.

    Note If you skip this step, you will need to create the file and add your students' information manually.

    Under Download Template:

    1. Select fullname or student number if you want to include this information.
    2. Select the file extension to use for the downloaded file.
    3. Click Download.

      The file is downloaded as a tab-separated text file with the filename extension you selected.

  5. Open the template file in your spreadsheet editor — both Excel and Google Sheets work well — and add assignment data.

    You can add one or more assignments. Each assignment's data is in its own column in the table.

    1. If needed, add a blank column right of the student information or previous assignment.
    2. Enter information about the assignment in the column, in the rows corresponding to the headers on the left.
      Note

      Your assignment information can only use the following characters:

      If you enter a disallowed character, scores might not upload correctly.

      Item Description
      Assignment How the assignment will be listed.
      Category Assignment category for GradeBook calculations.
      Description Optional description.
      Points How many points the assignment is worth.
      Due Assignment due date.
      Available Whether the assignment scores are shown to students:
      • Y = yes
      • N = no
    3. Enter each student's score in the student's row in the assignment column.

      Scores must be numeric and specified as points out of the total point value.

      Letter grades and missing scores are displayed as NA in WebAssign and are counted as 0 points.

  6. Save the spreadsheet to your computer as either a comma- or tab-delimited text file.

    Older versions of the Excel file format also work, but the text formats are more universally supported and work consistently.

  7. In WebAssign, for Upload Method, select Upload a file containing scores.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Select the file to upload.
    1. Click Browse or Choose File, depending on your browser.
    2. Navigate to the file you want to upload.
    3. Click Open or Choose, depending on your browser.
  10. Select the file format you used.
  11. Click Review.

    The assignments and scores you provided are listed.

    Values that can't be used, like invalid dates, are indicated so you can correct them.

  12. Click Save.

If you try to add an assignment with the same name as another assignment already scheduled or entered for the section, you are prompted to rename the new assignment or update the existing assignment information and scores. You can also create the new assignment with the same name as the existing assignment if needed.
