Add a Section to a Course

When you add a new section to an existing course, the schedule of assignments and other settings are copied from the current section.

Note This feature is not available for K-12 instructors who manage their courses through NGLSync.

Alternatively, see Copy a Section to an Existing Course.

  1. Open the Schedule page.

From My Classes, click Class Schedule under Class Tools.

  2. Switch to the section you want to copy and click Add Section.
    If your course Do this
    Currently has only one section
    1. Click Add Section above the Assignments list.
Currently has more than one section In the sections menu above the Assignments list:
    1. Switch to the section you want to copy.
    2. Click Add Section.
  3. Optional: Override the default copy settings.

Click Advanced Options and configure what you want to copy.

    Setting Description
Copy restrictions (security, time, conditional release) By default, the following restrictions are copied when each assignment is scheduled:
    • Password Protected
    • IP Address (Location) Restricted
    • LockDown Browser® Required
    • Timed Assignment
    • Conditional Release

Group assignment settings and conditional release waivers for students cannot be copied because those settings are unique to the roster of students for each section.

Create a new copy of assignments for each section

By default, the original assignments scheduled to the section you are copying are scheduled to the new section. This means that if you make changes to the original assignment, those changes are reflected in every section.

If you choose to create a new copy, the original assignments are copied and the copies are scheduled to the new section.

Important If you create a new copy of assignments for each section, do not later attempt to copy the section schedule to other sections in the course.

Because each section has a separate set of assignments, the assignments from the section you are copying will be added to — rather than updating — the existing (different) assignments in any sections that you copy.

After creating a new copy of assignments for each section, the assignment schedules for each section must be managed independently.

  4. Configure the sections to be added under Copy to New Sections.
    To do this Do this
Add one more section to the list Click Add Section.
Add multiple sections to the list
    1. Click the arrow button add many button to the right of Add Section.
    2. Set the number of sections you want to add to the list.
    3. Click Apply.
Remove sections from the list Click trash icon.
  5. Set the required information for each section you are adding.
    1. Type a Section name.
    2. Select the primary Instructor.
    3. Specify when the Class Meets.

You cannot copy a schedule from a section with meeting times to a section without meeting times or from a section without meeting times to a section with meeting times.

      • If the section you are copying specifies meet days and times, you must specify meet days and times for the new section.

Click the days on which the class meets, and type the start and end times.

      • If the section you are copying does not specify meet days and times, you cannot specify meet days and times for the new section.
  6. Optional: For each section, you can override the default copy settings for additional instructor access or gradebook settings.

Click Advanced Options and configure what you want to copy.

    Setting Description
Copy additional instructor access By default, any other instructors or TAs who have access to the section you are copying will have access to the new section.
Copy gradebook settings If a gradebook was configured for the section you are copying, it will be configured the same way for the new section.

Clear or select check boxes if you need to change the default behaviors.

The following additional section settings are copied to the new section:
    • Resource materials that were added or enabled1
    • Settings for Ask Your Teacher messages
    • Settings for private messages
    • Extension request policies
After the new section is created, you can change these if needed.
  7. Click Copy Section Schedule.

Always review the section schedule after copying. Usually, some changes are required for the new course. See Reschedule Assignments.

If your school should be billed for WebAssign access — common for high schools — set the student fee payment method for your new section to Bill Institution.

1 Personal Study Plan® settings are copied only for the Personal Study Plan associated with the primary textbook. See Secondary Personal Study Plan Settings Not Copied.
