  • Instructions

    Create your course assignments by selecting questions from our bank of end-of-section exercises.

    Every problem includes a link to the appropriate section of a complete interactive eBook, (also available through a dynamic table of contents from the student's WebAssign homepage), allowing students to highlight and take notes as they read.

    In this assignment we present several textbook question types found in Physics for Scientists and Engineers 1/e by Robert Hawkes published by Nelson Education.

    Click here for a list of all of the questions coded in WebAssign. This demo assignment allows many submissions and allows you to try another version of the same question for practice wherever the problem has randomized values.

Assignment Submission

For this assignment, you submit answers by question parts. The number of submissions remaining for each question part only changes if you submit or change the answer.

The figure below shows a multiloop electric circuit. The components have the following values.
ε1 = 17 V;   ε2 = 34 V (ideal batteries)
R1 = 13 Ω;   R2 = 16 Ω;   R3 = 16 Ω;   R4 = 26 Ω
(a) Find the currents through all the branches of the circuit.
I1 =  A
I2 =  A
I3 =  A
I4 =  A
I5 =  A

(b) Find the potential differences across each circuit element.
VR1 =  V
VR2 =  V
VR3 =  V
VR4 =  V

(c) How will your answers to parts (a) and (b) differ if the batteries are real batteries?

An initially uncharged 800 μF capacitor is being connected in series to a 2800 V emf source with a 80 kΩ resistor.
(a) How long will it take for the voltage across this capacitor to reach 95% of its maximum value?
s

What is its maximum value?
V

(b) When the capacitor reaches 95% of its maximum voltage, the charging circuit is removed and the capacitor is left charged but can slowly discharge through the moist air with a resistance of 1000 MΩ. How long will it take to discharge the capacitor to 30 V?
h

When operating, the resistance of the filament of a 60 W incandescent light bulb is 240 Ω. However, if you were to measure the resistance of the filament using a regular ohmmeter, you would find it to be about 12 times smaller (20 Ω).
(a) How can you explain this phenomenon? (Hint: Think what happens to the light bulb when it is plugged in.)

(b) Do appropriate calculations to show that when operating, the tungsten filament does have the appropriate resistance (240 Ω). (Use the following as necessary: V, P.)
R =

(c) Based on your calculations, find the temperature of the incandescent light bulb when operating. (The temperature coefficient of resistivity of tungsten is α = 4.5 10-3 K1. Ignore thermal expansion. Assume the initial temperature is 20°C. )
K
