Virtual E-Field Lab

Gregory Marlow

Add a new dimension to your electric field experiments with Virtual E-Field Lab. This Windows-based simulation program lets you move beyond simple point charges into a world of complex, extended systems. Unlike traditional experiments, which can require hours to model, Virtual E-Field Lab simulates the classical electric field experiments in a matter of minutes.

The program uses electrode configurations drawn quickly with programs like Windows’ Paint accessory, and users can assign electrode potentials with a click of the mouse. The electrode layout is limited only by your imagination, but the program includes layouts for capacitors, Jacob’s ladder, a dipole, a 60-degree sector lens, and many more. Depending on computer speed, the potential distribution corresponding to every pixel location of the configuration drawing can be computed in as little as 15 seconds. This means that you can explore a multitude of simulations in a single lab period!

In addition to generating equipotential and lines-of-force views, Virtual E-Field Lab also offers continuous potential and continuous electric field strength views. Numerical potential, numerical field strength, and a field direction arrow are continuously updated as the cursor moves through these views. The program can simulate ion ray trajectories through the computed electric field as well.

A detailed tutorial helps familiarize users with the program’s various capabilities and features, and the user’s manual includes an extensive list of tips and tricks to help get the most out of this versatile package. Teachers will benefit from the thorough instructor’s guide, which includes suggestions for the following demonstrations: Capacitor Plates, Two-Tube Lens, and Cloud and Lightening Rod. Sample electrode configurations include Dipole, Field Emitter, Jacob’s Ladder, Surface Electrodes, and Wire over Plane. 27 pp.
