"SOLID STATE PHYSICS gives you a tool to explore and learn physics, not the art of applied math. I highly recommend this tool to physics educators."
-Wlad T. Sobol,
UAB Hospital

"This software is an example of how instructive and useful a well-designed teaching offering can be."

Solid State Physics

Thomas Witelski

When you introduce your students to the solid state theory of crystals, lay a firm foundation with Solid State Physics. This program uses the variational method to determine energy states and wave functions of one-dimensional finite square lattices.

These lattices are the simple first approximation to real periodic atomic potentials used in the Kronig-Penney model. By solving for lattices of any finite size, you can observe the solutions for individual atoms, small groups of atoms, and the limiting process in approaching the infinite lattice of a crystal. The band structure shows the wave function superimposed on the lattice potential and its decomposition into the Bloch plane wave components. You can also model crystals exhibiting deviations from thermal effects, impurity atoms, and lattice vibrations.

Solid State Physics is easy to use and offers a detailed help system. It includes a variety of data files containing default lattice set-ups that illustrate important aspects of different solutions. You can also create your own set-ups and specify the potential height and lattice spacing of the wells. By enabling your students to visualize wave functions and energy levels, Solid State Physics will crystallize their understanding of solid state theory. 46 pp.
