Over the past decade, educators worldwide have developed a wealth of new physics courseware. This year, Physics by Pictures is the noteworthy package out of Russia. Created by a team of teachers from PHYSICON Ltd., this introductory program is highly recommended by the Russian Ministry of Education for its pedagogical value, interactive design, and minimal computer requirements. Physics by Pictures is a graphics-intensive package that is ideal for both high school and introductory-level college physics. Main subject areas include mechanics, thermodynamics and molecular physics, electricity and magnetism, optics, and quantum physics. A section on historical experiments looks at the work and laws of science pioneers like Joule, Brown, Coulomb, Faraday, Newton, Kepler, Rutherford, and Michelson. Physics by Pictures focuses on simulations involving various natural phenomena. Experiments and explanations of the physical laws pertaining to each concept can be found in the corresponding program texts, along with questions and problem-solving exercises. Users can vary parameters and explore the consequences at their own pace, checking their work as they go. Some of the examples provide an opportunity to develop new avenues for exploration. The package also includes two built-in calculators for performing simple and scientific calculations, lists of physical and mathematical formulas, tables of physical constants, and a chart of SI units. 39 pp. System Requirements:
