A Model Tutorial

The following model is an example of a well-written tutorial. Each part of the tutorial starts with an overview of its purpose and what will occur after an action is taken. Specific instructions are given, followed by the rationale behind the action:

This tutorial provides a quick look at each of the simulations in CHAOS SIMULATIONS. Later you can explore each simulation in depth using the information in succeeding sections of this manual.

Start CHAOS SIMULATIONS by the following procedure:

  1. Turn on your computer using DOS 2.1 or higher
  2. Insert a CHAOS SIMULATIONS diskette into drive a and close the door
  3. Type a: and press <Enter>
  4. Type start and press <Enter>
  5. When the startup program displays the title screen, press <Esc> to display the menu

Each section of the tutorial can be performed independently and in any order. The menu has two "pages." If the simulation you want to start does not show on the menu, press <PgDp> (or <PgUp>) to view the second (or first) page.

The first simulation on the menu, 1-D Map Iteration, demonstrates the graphical iteration of a one-dimensional (1-D) map.

Type 1 and press <Enter> to start the 1-D Map Iteration simulation

The program first asks you to confirm the type of graphics adapter it has automatically detected. (If this choice results in simulations not working correctly, exit the program, restart the program, and specify a different type of graphics adapter.)

Press <Enter> to accept the automatically detected graphics adapter

The program next asks you to specify the aspect ratio of your computer's monitor. A pattern of dots appears on the screen in the shape of an ellipse or a circle.

Press <+> to widen or <-> to narrow the pattern until the dots form a circle

Press <Enter> to accept the pattern

The program next asks for the type of printer connected to the printer port (LPT1) of your computer.
