If you want to get your students charged up about electricity and magnetism, but traditional teaching methods leave them static, EM Field is for you! This fully interactive software tool encourages rapid, qualitative exploration of electric and magnetic fields - a notoriously abstract topic - and will help your students gain an intuitive understanding of force fields, Gauss's law, Ampere's law, and the concept of flux.

Students can visualize electric fields produced by point and line charges and magnetic fields produced by current-carrying wires. They can set up a configuration of charges or currents and then use the mouse to view electric and magnetic field vectors, directional arrows, and field lines. They can also study various aspects of electric potential, including equipotential surfaces and potential difference. Electric and magnetic field vectors update in real time when you drag a charge or current, providing a dynamic, global picture of fields through out a region. You can save a set of measurement locations for monitoring fields. In addition, directional unit field vectors are colored to indicate magnitude.

EM Field also features an exclusive capability that lets students explore Gauss's law or Ampere's law as it pertains to their own configurations. As they draw a Gaussian surface or Amperian path with the mouse, the program displays a graphical representation of the contributions to the integral. When the surface or path is closed, the amount of the enclosed charge or current is displayed. This feature is fast and accurate, and it promotes insightful comprehension of both Gauss's and Ampere's laws.

As a bonus, the program contains a charge search game, which challenges students to use what they've learned to determine the locations and magnitudes of hidden charges or currents. EM Field will attract your students' attention and keep it focused. But more importantly, it will help you lay a solid foundation for their study of E&M. 34 pp.
