"Excellent software. Every undergraduate physics department should make it available to students."
- Kailash Chandra, Savannah State College

"A comprehensive research and learning tool that is ideal for investigators exploring chaotic problems requiring one- or two-dimensional maps."
- Phil Gash, California State University-Chico

"Good graphics and a modern user interface allow for detailed exploration of many standard chaotic systems as well as ones defined by user."
- Julian C.Sprott, University of Wisconsin, Madison

Chaotic Mapper

James B. Harold
University of Maryland

Chaotic Mapper is an exploratory tool that enables you to examine 22 linear and two-dimensional iterative maps of chaotic systems and three-dimensional differential equations. Its elaborate plotting capabilities let you create bifurcation cascades and fractal basin boundaries. You can enter your own equations and study convergence maps, 2-D plots, Poincaré sections, and basins of attraction. Other maps include the Mandelbrot set, the Hénon map, the Quadratic map, and the Julia map.

Chaotic Mapper's common interface invites experimentation with many scenarios. You can examine interesting new parameter regions and perform detailed studies of fractal systems. The program is easy to operate, featuring pull-down menus and quick key commands instead of vague command lines. A special option will even generate slide shows displaying complex time development. 108 pp.

System Requirements:
Your computer system and hardware configuration should be an IBM PC, XT, AT, or PS/2 computer with the following features:

  • Hercules, CGA, MCGA, EGA, or VGA color graphics
  • Minimum memory of 512 K
  • DOS 3.3 or higher
  • Math coprocessor (highly recommended)
  • Mouse (recommended)
  • Printer with graphics capability (recommended)
IBM PC versions of Physics Academic Software programs may not operate on non-IBM personal computers and peripherals.
