New WebAssign Features
1. Integrated GradeBook
WebAssign now has an integrated GradeBook. When
you set up your classes for the fall, be sure to set up your
grades in WebAssign with our easy-to-use GradeBook Wizard. http://www.webassign.net/info/gradebook.html
2. Building Block available
for Blackboard version 6.1
If your school uses
Blackboard version 6.1, our new Building Block feature will
simplify the process of setting up your class roster in WebAssign.
Ask your school's Blackboard administrator to download
this Building Block so you can use it with your class. It's
free! http://www.webassign.net/blackboard
3. Online testing using
Securexam Browser
If you want to give tests online, WebAssign now
offers a version of Securexam Browser that allows students to
access your test and nothing else. The secure browser provides
an added level of security and fairness by eliminating the risk
of cheating. When used in a testing environment, this option
does not permit instant messaging, e-mail, or web surfing, and
it helps guarantee that your students are only being evaluated
on their own work. http://www.webassign.net/securebrowser
4. New matching and image-map
question types
If you write your own questions in WebAssign, be sure to
try out the new matching and image-map question types. These two new
question types will help expand your ability to produce questions that
better assess key learning objectives with your students.

Upcoming Features for Fall 2004
WebAssign's overall layout and functionality
will not change for the instructor, however many exciting new
features will be added to the student side for Fall 2004.
1.
Redesigned student side
WebAssign’s student side has been redesigned
to be more visually appealing and to put additional information
at students’ fingertips. The number of points received
and submissions used for each question is now displayed in a
summary table next to each question. This allows students to
see at a glance which questions they should be working on.
2. Student text note option
available with every question
Students now have a space to add text notes along
with each question. Now you can ask your students to show their
work explaining how they got their answers and adjust their
score appropriately. Or this feature can be used simply for
your students' convenience while answering a question.
3. Customizable student
homepage
The student homepage layout can now be customized
to suit your individual WebAssign usage. You can decide which
modules appear, for example, Announcements, Communications,
Grades, My Calendar, etc., and you can even allow your students
to rearrange modules if they like.
4. Help Desk renamed "Ask
Your Teacher"
The Help Desk has been renamed "Ask Your Teacher."
You can also edit this name to reflect a more suitable label
for your class. For example, you could call it "Tutorial Desk"
if your TA answers student questions.
5. More assignment control
than ever
- Set the number of submissions individually
for each question or question part. For example, you could
choose to allow three submissions for a numerical question,
but only one submission for a multiple-choice question.
- A submission is considered used for a question
part only if the student has entered a new response to that
part. For example, if you allow three submissions for an assignment,
the student will be allowed three different responses for
each question part.
- Assignments can be set up so that questions
will be displayed one at a time. Note: In the future, we plan
to allow you to set conditions for displaying subsequent questions.
We need your input on what conditions you would use. For example,
perhaps your students must get a particular question correct
before the next question is displayed.
6. Set total points for
an assignment and let Webassign distribute them
Weighting of assignments just got easier. You now
have the option to set the total number of points for an assignment
and click "redistribute" to make each question worth
the same amount, summing to your specified total. You can then
reweight each answer further, if you like.
7. Simplified assignment
scheduling
Scheduling assignments with or without restrictions
is now easier than ever. You don't need to schedule an
assignment and save it before you can add restrictions such
as password protection, IP control, timer.
8. New Class Schedule
page and propagate features
The new Class Schedule page lets you see and edit
all dates for all of your assignments on a single page. You
can also now propagate one assignment to many sections or classes
quickly and easily.
These new features are based on numerous helpful
comments and suggestions we received from you and your fellow
teachers. Your insight and input are critical to the ongoing success
of WebAssign, and we appreciate hearing from you.
As always, our goal is to make WebAssign an even
better teaching tool for you and your students. If you have any
suggestions for additional improvements in the months ahead, please
let us know via e-mail at support@webassign.net
or by writing to our listserv at http://webassign.net/info/support/listserv.html.
I wish you the best of luck this next academic term.
Yours truly,
John S. Risley, President
