MA 114 online class
Student Evaluations -- Fall 2000

MA 114 Section 006 was an online course in Fall 2000. Since the class does not meet, distribution of the course evaluation form normally used in the math department was not feasible. (Many questions on that form are not applicable to an online section anyway because they pertain to classroom activities.)

Consequently, I posted an anonymous online evaluation form and requested students to submit it. The link to the online evaluation form was embedded in a WebAssignment which was accessible only to students in the class. Students were given 3 home work points credit for clicking a button in the WebAssignment stating that they had completed the evaluation form, but they were informed that the contents of the form itself would be sent anonymously via e-mail.

The following responses were all the responses received, and they are listed below in the order in which they were submitted during the period Dec. 1-11, 2000. The top row shows the five questions, and each subsequent row gives the response of a single student.

MA 114 -- Fall 2000 Evaluations

Evaluate the overall content of this course. Was the grading fair and was the amount of work expected reasonable? Evaluate the overall quality of the online materials (movies, WebAssignments, tutorials) used in the course. What is your opinion regarding the use of WebAssign for the in-class testing and final exam? Would you recommend the online section to a friend? Why or why not? Please share any suggestions you may have with regard to possible improvements in the course.
I think that the amount of work was fair and that the grading was fair as well. In fact I expected more quizzes/homework.....but I am glad that there wasn't more! This online course was well organized and prepared. I enjoyed it very much. I especially loved the WebAssignments!! I think the use of WebAssign for the tests is an excellent idea. It gives us the chance to find those silly mistakes that we make but aren't aware of until it's too late. I would definitely recommend this course to a friend. It is an enjoyable class! It is well prepared and goes at a good pace....not too fast and not too slow. I don't see any need for improving the course. The instructor and his assistant are available everyday if you need them and they promptly respond to emails.
The grading was fair and the amount of work was reasonable. outstanding I wish more classes would use it. Absolutely, it gives you a chance to learn from your mistakes. none
The grading was very fair and the expected amount of work was reasonable. Movies were excellent and a definite necessity. WebAssignments were very help. Help to prepare for test. Didn't use tutorials much. I think it is a great idea because a lot of times it's not a matter of not knowing the process for completing a problem, but a lot has to do with careless mistakes or misunderstanding what the problems ask. Given the opportunity to re-submit simply allows you to correct those mistakes. If you don't know the material, it wouldn't matter how many times you were given to submit. I think all math course should have test in this format. Definitely. I learned a lot in this course. I don't have good study habits. With webassign being weighted so heavily, I was forced to learn the material. And I was prepared for the test. I really like the format for this course and would not change anything.
The overall content of this course was good. The grading was very fair, but the amount of Webassign's did get to be a bit excessive at times. In the beginning the movies were good, but as the semester progressed, the movies didn't really seem to coincide with the homework questions anymore. The webassignments were too hard sometimes. Using Webassign as a testing method was a great idea. Yes I would definitely reccomend this to a friend if I thought they would have the discipline to keep up with the webasigns. Less Webassigns.
The grading was very fair i thought. It was too demanding of a course and i got enough help to make an A in the course. The webassigns were a lot harder than the course...... i also felt that the movies didnt match up too well with the work on the webassign compared to the other web based math class i took with you last semester.. i love the tests..... they give us a chance to get a good grade and it lets work off of jennifers shoulders. Yes,., especially with jennifer as the TA... she helped me out a TON and the class is well organized. make movies more relevant to webassigns...
The grading was fair and I liked the speed of the course. The amount of work was also very reasonable. The movies were a great help and a great teaching tool. The webassigns were very helpful because they accuratly reflect what will be on the exam. If you can do the webassigns, you should have no problem come test time. I love the use of webassign for in-class tests and the final exam. I like the availability to being able to submit the tests 5 times. I wish all tests were like this. The instant feed back helps a lot. Most of the ones that I will miss after it is counted wrong i go back and look at it and i just made a simple stupied mistake and I can fix it and get it correct. The use of webassign for tests is more effective for me than a normal sit down and take test on paper Yes! I wish there were more classes like this on-line. I've learned more in this class than any of my others b/c i could attend class any time i wanted in teh comfort of my own home. I usually miss class a lot and work a lot too so on-line classes are very convient for me & help me out tremendously. The only thing that I didn't like about this course was near the end of the course a lot of the problems on the web assigns were not exactly covered in the videos. The examples given in the videos didn't have really good examples relevant to some of the problems on teh webassigns. Other than that, the course was a great experience!
THe webassigns were set at a reasonable pace to be completed on time without having to do a whole lot of work at one time. THe grading was explained on the web page and was followed. THe tests and homework were very resonable. They were very helpful in learning the material. Sample problems were good, explanations were good. I think it is good especially since we were given several submissions so we don't make just careless mistakes and lose ppoints. Yes, you have to force yourself to do the work but you get to use notes and books on tests so it's gonna be a good chance for you to make a good grade.
yes good, except sometimes the movies and the text did not cover the same topics excellent except we did not receove copies of the tests and could we take the tests and the final at home yes, good course and instructor as noted above
The grading was more than fair. The amount of work was extremely reasonable for an online course. The movies were very clear and well organized. The web assignments were due at reasonable times and I found them very useful. Webassign helped me stay on track with the course. I like the use of webassign for testing. It gave me a chance to look at little mistakes I made before I submitted them. I also like know my score of the test right away Yes I would recommend this course. I really enjoyed the experience and I learned a lot more. No improvements. The class was great. The instructor was very helpful and understanding. The course was organized and helpful.
The overall content of MA 114 online was very thorough. I feel that the grading was beyond fair. The movies were very helpful in understanding the material. Jennifer George is a very nice person who was eagered to help me when I needed help. The tests were fair. Definantly. Math is my weak subject. I did better on my own because there was no one at my home to confuse me. I suggest the this class stay just as it is.
Yes to both of those questions. I thought everything was very well explained. The movies were detailed, and the example problems were helpful. I though it was a good idea. We used webassign all year, so everyone understood the process. And because you were allowed 5 submissions on tests it gave you the opportunity to work through problems you may have had difficulty with. Yes I would. It is a good class to take, and it allows you to be extremely flexible with your work schedule. Therefore you can spend time on the course when you have the opportunity not when you have. At this time I don't have any suggestions. I thought everything was well planned, and it was an interesting learning experience for me.
Evaluate the overall content of this course.: I felt that the grading in this course was very fair and i thought that the amount of work was just right for the material. I really liked the movies that were availible and i found them to be very informative and helpful. The webassignments were sometimes difficult, but overall not bad. I think that it is good because it gives us the advantage of working in a medium that we are used to working in. It was also very beneficial because having five submitions really allowed for the benefit of the doubt. Yes i would becuase i feel like the information was covered very well, and it allowed me to be more flexible with my schedule at the same time. Sometimes i found it difficult to keep up with the webassigns, which is enevidable comsidering that we are not in class every day to be reminded, but i feel like some of that could be allieveited if, instead of having 4 different webassigns for the same section, we only had one or two.
I believe this course was very fair and the work was very reasonable. I think the materials used in this course were great, the movies could go into more detail, because I thought the webassignments were a lot harder than the movies made it sound. I really liked the exams on in the webassign format because thats what I am used to using. Yes I would recommend this class, this is my second semester taking your online courses and I enjoyed them, I just wish you offered more. I wish you could do MA 132 because I like taking the internet course, because you know exactly what to do, when the tests are, and you can get in contact with Jennifer or Dr. Page very easily, and get timely feedback.
grading was fair and work was reasonable. Quality of movies and online materials was fine. The only problem i had was a few cases when the movies would explain a basic concept but you had to logic leap on your own to answer the webassign questions. I loved it, made it easy to get 100's all the time. I think it is actually more fair, since you may know how to do a problem, but could slip up on one point and get it completely wrong. Webassign allows you to see your mistake and correct it. In the end if you don't know how to do a problem, you still won't get it right no matter how many submissions you have. Yes, it is alot less stressful the a regular lecture class... and i learned the materal just as well. it was hard for me to make it to the TA hours, so more of them at more varied times might help.
yes, but i wish i could have extra credit opportunities good quality, sometimes seemed confusing i would like to have a schedule of webassigns ahead of time for trying to get ahead, it seemed as though they would pop up almost everyday, it seemed as though all i was doing 24 hours a day was webassigns, try to give notice of when they are. yes, easier ability to take without going to campus i'd recommend this course
The grading was fare. I found myself working more on the work in this class than others. Movies were well done. web-assign worked well for testing. yes, you just need to be careful not to neglect the work. The web-assign questions seemed to be much harder than the examples in the movies. You should atleast make most of the questions directly related to the questions.
Yes, grading was fair and amount of work expected was reasonable. I have recommended this course to a fellow student who will be taking it online next semester. This method of instruction is an asset. The Webassignemt process is easy to understand and the movies are a good representation of what one would expect to experience in a traditional class setting( minus fellow students). The best thing about the movies is that you can pause them and go at your own pace. You certainly do not have that luxury in a classroom. I love it! I already have, and she is taking it next semester. I did so because it is a wonderful opportunity for those who cannot meet at the dedicated times for a traditional class. You can watch the movie and do homework at 12 am if need be. My only "complaint" is that some of the homework problems are quite a bit more extensive than some of the examples given in the movies. I think there should be at least one example of the more challenging problems integrated into the movies.
I felt that the grading was very fair. Each and every question was weighted approx. the same according to the level of difficultly of the question. I also felt that though there was a lot of webassign homeworks, they were not too close together. I felt that the movies were the most helpful. I did not use the textbook hardly at all and thus don't feel that the text, should be a mandatory supplement. The thing that was most helpful to me was the availibility of the Professor and teacher's assistant for additional aid. I loved it. I gave me the opportunity to go back a fix mistakes that I had made on the tests before turning it in. A hand written would not have given me that chance. I would only if that person is well organized and self motivated with a reasonably good understanding of math in general.
the grading was very fair and the amount of work expected was reasonable. But i don't think that webassignments should have been assigned on the day of an exam!! i think more examples that were relevant to the problems in the webassignment should have been provided. i think it is very useful...for people that have trouble there is the option of rewatching the lessons, something you can't have in a regular class. .yes because i thought it was a very good clas more relevant examples!!!!!!!!!!
grading was fair, and work reasonable online materials were excellent in class testing was very acceptable yes, the course and teacher are both wonderful
Content of course was very useful...real world applications are great. The grading was extremely fair, but the number of webassigns was a bit excessive. Excellent...couldn't ask for better materials. Liked it alot. Definitely a great way to fit another three credit hours into your schedule...especially if you work and go to school as well. Possibly more flexible times for taking the exams. Maybe set them up on a password basis so each student has his/her own password and is allowed to access the exam once over a couple or three day period. This would help out those who are far away or have work conflicts...
Yes the grading was fair and reasonable with plenty of resources available. The materials are very helpful in understanding how to do the problems. However, some of the movies for chapter 5 would be more helpful if there were more homework problems solved, that varied in difficulty. Some of the webassign problems were more difficult to comprehend than the examples given in the movies. I think the webassign for in-class testing and the final is a great idea. There are a lot of calculations to make for the test and its nice to be able to see where you need to spend more time working. It is also a great opportunity to improve your test grade. Yes. The online section is good as long as you are self disciplined enough to keep up with it. It provides more resources to help you understand the material between the movies, tutorials and the help provided by the ta. It was a wonderful experience. The only suggestion I have is listed above for chapter 5. I felt that some of the webassign problems were more difficult than the sample problems given in the movies. I think if there were more problems worked out in the movies for chapter 5 that it would be easier to understand how to work the more difficult problems out on the webassign and test.
I think content was as expected and the grading fair. I was very satisfied with the quality of the Online materials I think webbassign is absolutely awesome. Very organized. I do wish there was a way to print only the last submission of past due assignments. This would be helpfull when preparing for exams. As it is now, if I made 11 submissions, I'll get all 11, when all I needed was the last. It kills trees. Absolutely. I find it convenient, very well organized. The instructors and technicians are available for questions. As I metioned befor, being able to print the last submission AFTER the assignment is due.
To my knowledge, the content was fair, and agreed with course requirements, and grading and course load has been fair. ok to poor. in many instances, the questions we are assigned in webassign and way off base from what is presented in the movies. I wasted many hours trying to figure out something, when a similar example would have had me solving the problem in five minutes you people are geniouses, and I truly feel that way, no sarcasm, I couldn't ask for a better testing method. yes, because I had overall success taking this course. once again, make sure all problems in webassign can be solved by referring to a similar problem in the book or on the webpage
The grades and work were fair and reasonable; however it was inconsistent. It might be easier to have asignments due on the same days of the week all the time when possiple and not to have assignments due in weekends. Graet! I think web assign testing should be used for all courses whenther they are taken via the net or not. absolutly for the simple fact that you may resubmit your test after correcting answers see # 1
the grading was very fair but the amount of homework was tremendous and having assignments due the same night of tests was rough especially when you know no one does it on time anyway there were a lot of homework assignments and that was bad cause you would forget that there were 2 back to back rather than at least every other day or somethign online materials were great once you got them all to function great great great kinda tricky though becuase you want to submit early to make sure you are going the right way and more desk space to write would be nice but other than that it was great:) yes, if they were good at math already if not then no cause it's hard to get help i dunno, but i found it hard to get help when i really needed it and not meeting with a professor initially made me nervous about talking to L page or jennifer cause i didn't know how they are...other than that it's alright the homework counting so much hurts cause it's honestly hard to get all of it done when there is so much and no way to remind yourself what's due when unless you are on every day
Yes, the grading was fair. Yes, the amount of work was not only reasonable but appropriate to understand the material. See below for further explanation. Movies: excellent. Webassignments: excellent. Tutorials: excellent. I thought the combinations of text, movies, tutorials and webassigns blended together very well. Many courses utilize workbooks which don't mesh well with lectures and text. Everything fit here. The 'system' never got in the way of learning and in fact it did what any good system should: it made the learning easier; the focus of my efforts where always efficiently on task. I looked forward to working on this class (versus another online course I am taking and a traditional classroom class -- both at NCSU). Excellent again. Because of the repetition with the webassigns during the class, the format for the exams was simple and effective. Absolutely. The key is Dr. Page and Jennifer's accessibility and teaching styles. Even though the lectures were recorded, Dr. Page's conversational style and interesting problems and simple explanations helped me understand difficult concepts and make the connection for real examples. Jennifer's prompt responses to emails made communication easy. Can't think of any right now! Maybe a little more time on the semester exams!
The grading was extremely fair and the amount of work expected was reasonable. I do not, however, like have webassigns due on the weekend. I usually have a lot of stuff going on on the weekend, I work two weekends out of the month and I'm also out of town two weekends out of the month, so remembering to do the webassigns by the weekend dates sometimes through me off. The online materials were extremely helpful. Your instruction in the movies were in great detail. The only problem would be the problems you give in your examples seem to be a lot easier than the problems on webassign which can make it a little confusing. I really like the use of Webassign for the tests and exam. The flexibility of the testing was also very helpful due to conflicts with work and school schedules. The use of webassign was very effective. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in taking this class. The online movies and the testing is very effective in teaching the students. The only improvement I would recommend is the possibility of having the examples in your movies a little more difficult, so when we do do the homework assignment on webassign, we are not as confused.
i believe that the grading was quite fair...it really helps in the learning process to have to many submissions - it's easier to teach yourself that way. the work amount is reasonable. webassign and the tutorials were helpful. i really didn't get to much out of the movies, however. that really makes the work a lot easier, i think...since we are already comfortable working on the computer, it makes it easier to do the tests in the same format. yes, if they would be willing to motivate themselves to work independently. i do not, however, think that this course if anyone who is not willing to take a couple of hours every few days to figure out the work. i think that the book would be *a lot* more helpful if it had examples like the problems that we have on webassign, instead of just examples of the theory behind the problems that we do. i realize that there are example problems with answers in the back, but they do not really show you how to work the problems.
There was a lot of content for this course and was very hard toward the end of the course. The grading was fair and the amount of work was reasonable. The movies were helpful in some cases but a lot of the problems didn't have examples that you could look at to help you w/ the problems. The movies sometimes didn't load properly (get a page saying 'access denied to this page' which is very frustraiting. I think the web assign is fair as long as you do the work. If you dont', your #^$#ed I would recommend this class to a friend but also inform them to do the web assigns or your in big trouble... N/A
yes, maybe a few less web assigns didn't like movies not bad, like how you can submit more than once .definately, like not going to class less webassign
yes easy to understand, especially cause you can start and stop them over and over again news was kept up to date and we were notified of changes in plenty of time i like web assign, it's easy to use for the tests and five submissions is fair, since it's a test and all yes, it's an easy A if you're motivated enough to get the work done in time, i was kinda scared because of the grade distribution, but it really isn't hard and there is always someone to help if you need it
Yes WebAssignments could at times be difficult (ie some of the problems seemed to be very different from examples on movies I liked it, but I work better if I can see it on paper rather than on a computer screen Yes and I have. When you have a busy scheule like I have it makes it easier to schedule your own time to learn and study
no the work was to much for the class. By the time we did one assignment we had to do another one that was to hard, to soon to comprehend to do well on and grasp. The movies were not planned very well, they were just like the book, whicj like the movies, doesn't allow the students to undrestand the consepts, just to say ok, that is what is supposed to happen no matter what, then on the tests the exact opposite happens, and he expects us to know what to do!! allow the testing to be like the homework, allow a certain amont of days in which to do the test. The classrooms used are cramped and uncofortable, which for people. Also the students choosong the internet class are choosing because they don't have to go to class to interact with the class, and with the classroom you manipulate the mental anxity of the students to help them do worse on the tests!!! yes if there was a revolotionary change in the processes of the coarse, in the area of the homework and the tests!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Change your thinking towards the students DR. Page, You are not God, the students deserve more when you are teaching a internet coarse,we are lazy and we want to sit in our rooms to do the tests and homework, not come and be confused in a cramped classrom where we are not used to the obsolete computers you make us use!!!!!!!!!! Get a grip on the students before you try and teach us Matrix!!!!!!!!!!!
The grading was fair however the webassigns were a little difficult and were hard to understand if we were not given any examples like them. So, I did not know how to do several of the problems because I did not know how to do them or set them up. Movies more examples and different examples than the ones in the book. It is a really good idea, but the only downfall was that you could not get partial credit on the tests. Yes, because some students have problems going to class, therefore the online version compensates and you still learn the information without having to learn it in a classroom with lectures. I have already stated them above.
yes it was very good love it definetly
The grading was fair amount of work was fair the overall quality of the online materials was excellent i liked using webassign for tests and the final i would recommend it to my friends who are independent learners. I could study and do homework on my own time. I have a busy schedule I am taking st370 online much like this class and Dr. Boos gives notices and reminders of when assignments are due. I missed a couple assignments because I forgot to look at the webpage and didn't realize that assignments could be due on weekends. It's the students' responsibility to complete the course work on time but it would help if there is an email reminder of assignments due
The grading was fair. I liked the fact that a lot of emphasis was placed on the homework so the test weren't so detrimental. webassignments were very helpful. the movies didn't always download properly and i think it would have been much easier to sit in the class to ask questions and see more examples. i like it a lot. it gives you a chance to rethink your way of solving the problem because you get extra chances. also, it allows you to make sure you didn't make any dumb mistakes. no because i think sitting in the lecture would be more beneficial so you can ask questions and have problems solved while you ask questions.
lot of homework assignments, but acceptable considering amount of of material to be learned, however should be kept off weekends, caused me to miss a few. pretty good however, examples were always simple making homeworks difficult i liked the ability to submit more than once, it helped prevent stupid mistakes, yes, helped aliviate pressure of other classes to have own schedule provide more difficult level examples, and try to keep homework assignments during week.
Yes, I think the grading was very fair and the work load was well laid out for the course. The movies were great, everything was well taught and explained and the numerous examples made the assignments alot easier. I think it made testing alot easier, and less stressful, since it was the format that I was familiar with in doing the assignments. I definitely would, I think it was taught just as good as a regular class and I was able to learn better due to the fact that if I didn't understand something I could just watch the movie again, and I knew right away if an answer on the hw was right or wrong. Although i kindof wished that when the assignment was past due, you could see step by step the right answers and see where you went wrong Just the suggestion that maybe the web assign answers would also show how the problem should have been worked after the assignment was past due.

I think the course was well paced. I felt that ample time was given for the volume and difficulty of the material. Since you either got the right answer or you didn't, it is hard to argue with the grading. I don't feel there were and trick questions, just some that made you think a little more than others. Responses to questions online was excellent! always timely. The movies were great. In plain english and good examples. I personally love webassign, so taking this class was a joy for me. I would suggest that ALL MA114 students be made aware of the videos and movies. It would be a great study supplement. I switched out of a regular lecture class and these video's were so much easier to understand than the instructor. I do not suggest that they are a replacement for having a real live person to answer questions. I am all for it. Instant feed-back is great! Good to keep it like the homework, helps students feel more comfortable. I already have. I think online courses are great for any student that is atleast average. A voluntary email / instant messenger list so students can help each other. Keep up the great work!
The grading was fair but I think some of webassigns were a little tough. Some weeks there were too many webassigns due I thought. The movies should cover a better variety of problems because some of the problems on the webassigns were not covered in the book or movies. Also the webassigns should show problems different from those in the book. I think its great because you find out your grade immediately. The only drawback is that you cannot receive any partial credit like on a hand written test. Yes because the course allows you to go to class when you want. For some people that is an advantage. No other comments.
Grading was semi-fair, however, i thought that WAY too much emphasis was placed on the webassign grades, I understand that it is important to make sure that people keep up with them, i think the percentage of the total grade to webassign was a little excessive. The movies were great at first, but then as problems increased in difficulty, the movies became less and less helpful to the point where i couldnt get any help from them and i was forced to get many zeros on assignments where if i had more help, i would have been fine. The main problem was that the movie would show you one type of problem, but then on the webassign, the same method wouldnt work and would need to be changed in order for the problem to work, and it was near impossible to figure out the new way that you were expected to change the formula. The use of it for the tests was GREAT! I thoroughly enjoyed being able to take my tests online with the 5 submissions, it really took alot of the stress off of making stupid errors while shooting through a test to complete it ( i am bad at this) I was able to really excel on the tests. Absolutely because it is a very clear representation of what you need to know for tests and takes alot of the guess work out of studying. Also, as stated above, the 5 submissions alowed me to concentrate on getting problems right and not having to worry about stupid careless math mistakes allowing me to go back and fix things that i knew but just carelessly missed. PLEASE make the movies towards the end of the course more representitive of what is going to be asked in the webassigns, and / or dont put so much emphasis on the webassigns. Thankyou for a great year.
I believe that the grading for this course is almost too fair. But PLEASE do not change it. I loved it with a passion. This is one of the most successful classes I have had because of this grading scheme. As for the online materials, I thought that atleast 75 percent of the movies did absolutely nothing for me at all. They usually had nothing to do with the problems at all. Most of my learning was spent discussing material for hours with friends. The use of Webassign for this class is absolutely wonderful. Like I said earlier in the first question this is a VERY good format of class for students that hate the classroom or just feel more confortable. I recommend taking this type of class to anybody. I would also like to request more classes to be available online such as this one. The only improvements I can think of is that the movies given have more to do with the homework and not some abstract reference that is almost impossible to decipher for figuring out the problems.
The grading was very fair. The only problem was the question of how many decimals to round some of the homework problems to. Other than that, It could not have been improved. They were great. They were very clear and easy to understand. I don't think I would have done as well if it had been a written exam. Althougn at first I was worried because it did not leave room for partial credit. Yes. But I wouldn't reccomend it to a friend with out self discipline. It requires too much of that.
I thought the grading and amount of work was fair and reasonable. It worked out well for me the way it was set-up I was still able to learn and understand while taking it online. The movies were very good and easy to follow. I felt the Webassignments were sometimes more difficult than the movie problems. I liked using Webassign for the class tests and final exam. Yes, the movies are easy to follow and I learned the material. I also liked the course b/c I could listen and watch the movies at my own choice of time which was helpful with my busy schedule and if I had problems I could go visit Dr. Page or Jennifer for extra help.
#5.
I like the course overall. I would rather have more webassigns that are not as long than just having a few that were really long.
yes Well put together Great idea. Yes. Gives you time at home and when you're busy you can return without a problm em none
Grading was fair...There was alot of work, but I guess it was comparable to regular homework assignments in a typical class. The movies were helpful. I really liked having the tests on WebAssign. I would, but with a warning...keep up with the work! Primarily to friends who I think would take the time necesary to do well in the course. I really cannot think of anything I disliked about the course...otherwise I would be happy to make suggestions.
The grading was definitely fair and everything went well. The work wasn't too bad to do, just sometimes would forget when things were due All of the tools were very helpful. I think all notes are helpful and therefore Webassign would help in any way. The only thing that bothered me was that the exact some question that was on the webassign was on the test--this means if the person knew the answer then he/she could get the question right without knowing how to do it. The questions need to be changed, even if it is just the numbers. Yes because getting up and going to class is tedious and it's easier to take a course at your own pace (within deadlines ofcourse). Just to change questions so that people will know how to do it instead of just copying answers.
Yes. I liked that this course is online because you can go at your own pace. The content flowed very well. Chapter 6 ended up using a lot of the lessons we learned about matrices early on in the course. The book was the most helpful thing to me in this course. If you start reading it completely from day 1, you never fall behind and you don't need the movies that much. I really like WebAssign because you know your grade immediately and if you find a problem that draws on past lessons, you have all the assignments in front of you to reference. I really liked the using WebAssign for tests. I of course liked it because you got 5 submissions, but I also liked it because you immediately know what your grade is. With online testing, you get exactly 2 hours for the test and the test is presented in the same way as the homeworks. This helps so you don't "freeze-up" during tests. I have already recommended this to friends. I work full time and this helps because I can work at my own pace. I can do all my homework for the next 2 weeks over 1 weekend, if I need to. When I go to study for my tests, I have all of my study material together in one place on Webassign. I really don't have any. I like the way the homework and tests were presented. I liked the book and the content of the course. I like the postings on the course webpage because the teacher can communicate with the students without them having to always check their email. If I needed specific help, I would email Jennifer and I always got promt, helpful emails back. I give the entire course an A+.
yes it was movies were extremely helpful and in some regaurds better than class because you could go back and play them again convenient i would only recomend this course to someone with self discipline and not a procrastonater like myself. good overall course
Yes, the grading was fair and the work expected was reasonable and covered all the lessons thoroughly. The online materials were very useful in helping me complete the homework. THe webasignments were a good reflection of what the lessons in the text were about. I really enjoy taking the tests on the webassign. I feel that i learn a lot more when i can use my materials. Plus, it gives me an incentive to do all my homework. I would definitely reccomend the online course to a friend. i feel i did really well in it and i think i did better not having to attend a class, but instead learning on my own with the help of the online materials. i can't think of any suggestions to improve it. i think it is great just the way it is.
Yes, I have found the amount of work and schedule of assignments exceptionally fair. The students are given every possible opportunity and method to maximize their grade. Extensions are granted frequently, and tests are open book and open notes. What else can one ask for? The movies are clear and thorough. If one takes the time to go through the movies and think about the instruction, I see no reason why he or she should be unable to score in the high nineties on tests and complete webassignments. Save the Trees! Yes. The fact that there are no classroom sessions gives one the ability to better combine school and any other activities. It is especially helpful to people who tire of the routineness of repetetive classroom schedules. The instruction is more than adequate. As long as the student is capable of disciplining himself or herself to do the work without the threat of childish, adult-supervision attendance policies there is no reason why he or she should not score well and leave with a firm understanding of statistical basics. This class is more than fair. No improvements needed.
The webassigns were very difficult. I think since this was a web course then the web assigns should have been due before the exam. There were times when I couldn't get in to get help before the webassign was do then the due date came and went. It would have been nice to have them all do like a few days before the exam. The material was great. The videos were wonderful. I thought that was a great idea. I loved how you had 5 submissions because I always make stupid mistakes. I know how to do the problems but sometimes I just copy a number down wrong off my calc. and the answer comes out wrong. This way I could catch these mistakes and get the answers right. I already have. I think this is a great course to take online. Its like you have your vary own teacher. Just about the webassignments. I think they sould all be due before each exam.
yes Movies are detailed, Webassigns are very The exams were exactly like the webassigns yes, convenient USE A DIFFERENT BOOK
great great great great great
yes great fantastic definitely thanks to Jenn
yes ok you should more submision yes none
Everything expected of us seemed reasonable. My only difficulty came in remembering to do the webassignments in time. If we had had the option of submitting webassignments a day late for some penalty, I would have done significantly better. The movies seemed to clearly explain what was required to solve the problems presented in the webassignments. The tools provided (simplex tool, etc.) were an incredible help. 5 submissions is probably a bit much, but I was happy to have them. I highly recommend this online section. It eliminates the hassle of having to go to class. Once again, allowing for late webassign submissions with penalty would have helped me out.
I think the grading was fair, I think the amount of webassigns might have been a little bit excessive. I thought the movies for the most part were good, although sometimes the movies did not seem to correlate very well with the webassigns. This made it hard to complete some of the homeworks. I liked the use of webassign's for the tests. Yes.
Overall, I feel that the grading was quite fair and the amount of work was reasonable. There was enough to get the points across without "overdoing" it. Even though I didn't start utlizing the movies until chapter 5, I felt that the movies were very helpful. The instructor explained everything in detail and really made the topics/formulas/scenarios seem very sensible and understandable. I have nothing negative to say about the testing being done on WebAssign. Yes, I would. It's a very understandable course that one would be able to gain the knowledge of this course very easily through this medium. As long as you have the needed items for this course, I feel that this course is exceptional. The materials are easy to follow, the teacher is easy to work with and the assistant is always very timely with her responses to questions via email. With the quality of materials doubled with the high level of support, I feel this course is exceptional.
I personally feel that the amount of work expected was a little unreasonable for a online course. It became a little difficult without an instuctor. The movies were not always very helpful. Sometimes the instructor would not demonstrate any sort of examples that would even remotely help with the assignment. I think that would be a great idea. No, it becomes very difficult when you have questions and aren't really able to ask your instructor. I don't think that you can really inprove an online course.
yes, homework grade counts to much towards final grade though tutorials were good up until the last chapter i like it alot yes make test grades a higher percentage of final grade
course coverd what was the book chapter by chapter.the grading was fair, the amount of work expected was ok might could have been better wasn't able to utilize the movies from my computer. The other tools were helpful in many different ways. i like it tends to be a little better because it is less agrivation.plus you are able to see the grade instuntly. yes because you are able to manage your time beter. more contact w/ students from the professor. Q/A periods thoughout the semester.
grading was very fair, work was acceptable and helped me learn movies were very organized, however sometimes the book, movies and tutorials did not help me on some exact problems i liked it a lot definetly, it was easy and i knew how i was doing the whole time. none
Yes, the grading was fair. There were a lot of webassigns, but it was reasonable and necessary in order to learn the material without having class. Movies, were good, and concentrated on exactly what was needed to be done to complete the webassignments. Some webassigns were confusing, but they were relatively useful and effective. I liked it very much. I actually believe that all math courses should allow students to take their tests using webassign. I definately think my grade is better in this class because of it. Yes i would. I think anyone who has the discipline to use the materials, would benefit in a class such as this. I think the material offered through the online movies, was much, much, much, more effective than the book. The one problem I had with the course was that I did not think the book was very good. There are definatley not enough examples of problems in it. The explainations of how to do problems was confusing and I think the movies corrected the deficiency of the text.
Yes Great It was wonderful yes, I learned a lot and could do it on my own time
I think the content of the course was excellent. The grading was quite fair; I found that I knew what to expect on the test; in fact, I knew what my grade would probably be going into each test based on how well I did on the assignments. I found the movies to be the better source during most of the course -- Chapter 5 might be the exception here, due to the fact that the text was equally as good. I tend to do better looking at things through the real world perspective as opposed to the context of mathematical theorems and jargon. I found the text to be cumbersome at times. The visuals in the movies made the most sense to me. I have a high opinion of the process -- especially the 5 submissions. In that time I had the opportunity to correct stupid mathematical errors (I have a certain proclivity for such errors). Most definitely. I wish there was a broader course offering. As a part time professional and full time parent, the structure of the course was perfect for me. None at this time.
VERY GOOD EXCEPT FOR THE QUESTIONS ASKED IN THE LAST CHAPTER WERE NOT LIKE THE QUESTIONS IN THE HOMEWORK. THE FACT THAT ASSIGNMENTS WERE DUE DURING DEAD WEEK AND DURING EXAMS DOES NOT SEEM TO BE FAIR. ALONG WITH STUDYING FOR EXAMS, HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT HOMEWORK IS UNREASONABLE. EXCELLENT BUT BORING, AND SOME OF THE VIDEOS DID NOT GO ALONG WITH HOMEWORK AND BOOK CONTENT GOOD, EXCEPT SOME OF THE WEBASSIGN WERE MORE DIFFICULT THAN THE EXAMPLES IN THE BOOK. YES, BECAUSE YOU CAN GO AT YOUR OWN PACE. NO HOMEWORK ON DEAD WEEK AND MAKE THE EXAMPLE IN THE VIDEOS AND BOOK MORE SIMILIAR TO THE WEBASSIGN.
The overall content of the class was right on the money. I found each of the topics listed on the syllabus, covered very well. The grading was very fair, and the amount of work was resonable for this type/level of class. I think the movies were well done, although some sections could use a little more detailed examples, especially chapter 5. WebAssign, was easy to use and readily availiable. Tutorials were a big help. I believe that WebAssign, is a good tool to use when doing the in-class testing. Since all of the homework assignments are done using web Assign it is a good use of availiable technology, and the students are already familiar with how it should work. I would definately recommend the online version of MA114 to a friend. The course is well thought out and well taught, and is tailored to the Lifelong education/Distance learner. On campus students can also take advantage of it. I believe the chapter 5 could use a few more examples, and the movies for chapter 5 could use a little more detailed examples, some additional step by step examples would be great!
The grading was fair and amount of work was reasonable. Helped to learn a lot in this course. The movies helped out a lot and so did the tutorials. First time WebAssign user and it was really easy. I liked it because not everyone had the same test and it was hard for other people to cheat off of you. Yes, it helped out my GPA and was a well paced course.
The work load was heavy, but it was very fair grading movies were good, webassign was sometimes worded funny I like it, very fair. If they are stong in math, I am not so it was harder for me A little more detailed Web Assigns. Test reviews.
The grading was pretty fair. However, there were tons of homework assignments (webassign) and i think some assignments should be dropped (like 2 or 3) The online tutorials were ok. The movies were pretty good. They had some examples from the book but there wer also a few examples that the book did not contain, which helped out alot. I like the use of Webassign for the tests and final. Yes because it is easy to keep up in the course if you're real independent because you can choose when to work on the class to fit your schedule. If there was an SI or some kind of problem session that reviewed examples that aren't in the book, that would help. The book was good, but did not show examples for some of the stuff taught.
Yes I thought the course was fair. The work was not too much considering I did not have to spend any time in class. Everything was very helpful. No complaints. It worked fine. Yes as long as he/she was diligent enough to keep up with the webassigns. It is actually an easy course seeing that your tests and exam is open book and notes, plus you get to submit them five times. Send emails out the week of the tests like you did for the first one. The second exam really snuck up on me.
This course is challenging, but not too challenging to where you cannot get the other subjects you have completed in a timely manner. The online matireal were very helpfull, but the webassigns did not match all the problems in the examples. This promoted thinkin of new methods and ideas I would have not thought of, if all the examples were shown. I believe it is good. In today's high pressure world, we need to ensure our students have the capability of working under pressure. I have already recommended this course to several friends. It is very interesting. Perhaps move the final few webassigns back a few days so that people have the time to complete study/take home finals and are still able to soak up the rest of the math.
Yes the work was very fair and I felt this class was just as hard as a regular on campus course. The online materials were very helpful with the test. The webassigns were wonderful learning tool. I like and will continue to take more web courses in the future. I would definately recommend because you can move at you own pace however you still have disipline yourself because of course deadlines, but it gives more hands on experience, and more concentration from the individual. No improvements nessary, wonderful course and wonderful the way it is.
