New GradeBook to roll out April 3, 2004

Don't Panic!

Your GradeBook Settings from your current classes will be maintained in
the updated GradeBook.

The new GradeBook interface is much easier to work with. The views are
more powerful, but your current settings will not be changed.

New Features of the WebAssign GradeBook

New setup wizard

When setting up a GradeBook for your class for the first time, or if you ever want to start over and reset all settings for a GradeBook, just click "Wizard" on the GradeBook page. WebAssign will walk you through the choices you need to make to get your GradeBook up and running the way you like it.

User-defined Categories of assignments

You can now create as many unique types of assignments as is convenient. No more using "Lab" for your unique post-class exercises!

You decide what these categories should be called and how they factor into students' final grades.

Redesigned Settings window

We have completely redesigned the settings for the GradeBook so that they appear in a popup from the main GradeBook page. From this settings window you will be able to easily change many things about the functionality and display of your GradeBook, including:

  • Which categories of assignments to include in the GradeBook
  • Whether each category average is calculated by WebAssign or by you
  • Weighting of assignments within Categories
  • Weighting of categories towards final grade
  • Which details are available on the student view
  • A letter scale to assign a final grade based on final averages
  • Whether to use all assignments or only past due assignments in calculations
  • How many assignments to drop for each category

Opportunity to use only your own spreadsheet

By popular demand we have implemented a way to upload a custom spreadsheet which you have created as your entire WebAssign GradeBook. To try out this feature in a GradeBook that is already initialized, click "Settings" to pop up the GradeBook Settings window. Inside the "Basic" tab, choose "Use my own spreadsheet as a GradeBook" and save. You will then see instructions for uploading your spreadsheet.

Completely redesigned Student View

The student view has been expanded to include a complete, easy to reference summary of all scores that a student has achieved on all assignments. Also included are class statistics and histograms on each assignment, if you choose to make such statistics available.

The student view also shows final averages and letter grades, along with a summary of exactly how this final grade was calculated.

Drop assignments completely from the GradeBook

It is now possible to remove assignments from all GradeBook calculations. You can choose to drop the two lowest homeworks, for example; and you can mark specific assignments as "drop this one" or "this assignment cannot be dropped from the average calculations.

Now includes letter grades and pass/fail

You can now define a grading scale for your class, indicating exactly what final average must be achieved to earn each letter Grade. You can use Plus/Minus grades (A-, B+, etc) if you choose.

For those instructors that grade on a pass/fail system, we have added the ability to do this directly in the WebAssign GradeBook. Students can see how many points they need to achieve a passing score and track their grades as the term progresses.

And so much more!

There are so many improvements to the GradeBook that it is nearly impossible to list them here. The best way to learn more is to try it out!

We will post an update to the online manual covering all aspects of the new GradeBook with more specific instructions and screen shots. Look for that very soon!
